No matter how you choose to buy, cloud usage is billed monthly and metered by the minute: compute for the vCPUs you provision (adjustable anytime), plus the storage, backups, data transfer, and add-ons you use.
On-demand (pay-as-you-go) customers start with no upfront commitment and are billed in arrears each month for what they used.
Customers with annual and committed-use contracts purchase credits upfront for the term - each credit is worth $1, and all monthly usage draws down from their available credit balance.
Yes. Every new Cloud organization gets a 30-day free trial with $400 in credit. No credit card is required to try Standard; Mission Critical requires a credit card because it runs on dedicated infrastructure.
The trial ends after 30 days, or once you have used the $400 credit. Your clusters are then paused, and you have a 30-day grace period to keep them by adding a payment method. Add one and they resume on usage-based pricing; if you do not, they are deleted.
Yes. Billing is based on what you provision and store, not how much you query. To lower charges, scale down or delete the cluster, reduce provisioned storage, tune backup retention and frequency, or turn off add-ons.
Briefly. Managed backups are kept for their retention period after the cluster is deleted, and you are billed for that storage until they expire.
The difference is whether you size storage yourself or let it scale for you:
Usage-based storagescales automatically: there is nothing to provision or resize, and you only pay for the data you actually store.
Provisioned storage means you allocate a fixed amount of storage capacity up front and pay for what you’ve provisioned, whether or not it’s full.
Availability depends on edition: Standard edition uses usage-based storage. Mission Critical uses provisioned storage today; usage-based storage is in single-region preview for Mission Critical, so it has feature limitations and isn’t recommended for production environments.
An edition is set per cluster and cannot be changed in place. To move between Standard and Mission Critical, create a new cluster in the edition you want, then back up and restore your data into it.
Yes. Annual and committed-use contracts qualify for volume discounts. Contact sales to discuss a commitment that fits your usage.
Private offers are available through the AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure marketplaces. Pay-as-you-go billing is available through AWS and Google Cloud. Marketplace spend can draw down your existing cloud commitment.
Compute, storage, backups, and data transfer track the underlying cloud provider's costs, which differ by region. Rates are generally higher in Asia-Pacific and South America than in North America and Europe.
Cockroach Continuum is available to new Cloud organizations created on or after September 15, 2026, which get it automatically. Existing Cloud customers stay on their current pricing unless they opt in through their account team.
